SEDIMENT TRANSFER

SYSTEM (STS)

The Sediment Transfer System (STS) is a fully automated sediment conveyor developed to safely and efficiently move sediment downstream from water intake structures. Originally designed for run-of-river hydroelectric projects, the STS is a flexible solution that can be adapted to a variety of aquatic environments experiencing sedimentation challenges.

Automated Sediment Management for Hydropower and Waterways

Reduce sediment buildup. Maximize energy output. Protect the environment.

Cross Section of a Sediment Transfer System designed and patented by SSES

Sediment accumulation is one of the most common and costly operational issues at hydroelectric facilities and other water-based infrastructure.

Conventional solutions like dredging and excavation:

  • Are expensive and labor-intensive

  • Disrupt aquatic ecosystems

  • Require regular site access and heavy equipment

  • Can cause regulatory and environmental concerns

The STS was developed as a sustainable, automated alternative that mitigates these challenges—permanently.

How it works

Why it matters

The STS is a low-speed, high-durability conveyor system composed of two main parts:

  • Drive Base: Electric motor and control system

  • Drive Line: Chains and buckets to transfer sediment

As the system reciprocates, it methodically transfers sediment from upstream of a water intake structure to a location where the river’s natural flow can redistribute it.

The system is:

  • Fully automated and remotely operable

  • Capable of continuous operation

  • Designed for minimal maintenance

This is repetitive…Icons above encompass this message. Can it be removed?

Benefits of the STS

  • Long-term sediment control

  • Reduces or eliminates need for dredging

  • Protects aquatic habitats and reduces turbidity

  • Preserves power output and equipment lifespan

  • Complies with sediment discharge regulations

  • Custom-fit to your site and operational needs

  • Field-proven and safe to operate

Is the STS Right for Your Project?

If your hydroelectric or water infrastructure project is experiencing sediment buildup, especially at intake structures or headponds, the STS may be an ideal fit.

It’s particularly effective for:

  • Run-of-river hydro projects

  • Remote or environmentally sensitive sites

  • Any infrastructure needing sediment removal

Full-Service Delivery

We provide turnkey services for every stage of your project:

  • Site assessment and system design

  • Custom fabrication and installation

  • Remote monitoring and operation

  • Maintenance, training, and technical support

With the STS, you get more than a product—you get a long-term solution supported by a team that understands your project’s complexity
